The participation of the orthodontist in interdisciplin- ary treatments
Orthodontic Review 26 / 2024 book 2
An important step forward in dental medicine is the integrated approach in the treatment of patients with complex orthodontic and medical needs. orthodontic treatment, in support of periodontology, improves periodontal health and corrects abnormal gingival and bone topography. the orthodontist directs the movement of the teeth and redistributes space, facilitating future prosthetic rehabilitation. they also collaborate with surgery in cases of congenital anomalies, discrepancies in jaw sizes after growth completion, severe asymmetric growth, and anatomical limitations. an important role is also played in the treatment of osa (obstructive sleep apnea) by considering the anatomical features leading to this condition. a key aspect is the joint creation of a treatment plan that ensures the achievement of long-term oral health.
